London, as we know it, effectively began in Roman times. It is conceivable that earlier settlement occurred but to date, there is, we believe, no evidence for anything major. Some timbers, dated at about 3500 years before present suggest that there could have been an early bridge or maybe a landing stage. Londinium, as London was known in Roman times, was founded on the present site of the city of London, a few years after Claudius' invasion of AD43. It is now thought to have been a civilian settlement rather than military. It was destroyed by Queen Boudicca (Bodicea) about 10 years later, but in true London Fashion, it bounced back. London has bounced back on many other occasions too, after the Plague, the Great Fire of London, the Blitz on London during the second world war and more recently IRA and other terrorist attacks.
Despite being the largest urban sprawl in the UK, London has retained significant areas of greenery such as Hyde Park, Kew Gardens, Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common to name but a few. But on your treasure hunt, you will also find many smaller gems - peaceful squares surrounded by mews and tucked away from the noise, hustle and bustle of city life, places that you would otherwise miss.
